San Miguel between the past and the future

99

During the second half of the 20th century, San Miguel de Allende became a very particular destination. On the one hand, it became one of the favorite places to move, mainly for Canadian and North American expatriates. On the other hand, San Miguel became popular as an ideal place for young artists to spend long periods studying at the Fine Arts schools and the Allende Institute. The dream of characters like Cossio del Pomar and Stirling Dickinson, in some way, was crystallized.

San Miguel went through a golden age: a small city possessed of an artisanal spirit and a spectacular force when it came to celebrating its festivals and traditions, coupled with a cosmopolitan atmosphere that caused thousands of tourists to be interested in discovering one of Mexico’s colonial jewels.

Entering the 21st century, San Miguel experienced important changes that have seriously impacted the social and economic dynamics of our times. During the last 20 years, the population grew by approximately 50% and tourism went from about 500,000 visitors to around 2,000,000 per year. Gentrification, the environment, public safety, and the real estate phenomenon have become recurring topics for the community in general.

At Planeta San Miguel we understand that we cannot continue longing for the dream town that once made us so proud, that San Miguel will not return! Nor do we intend to find culprits for the problems that currently afflict us. In the end, an entire society builds the present it lives in. What we intend is to develop a communication channel that connects us in the present, that serves as a bridge that helps build a community with a view to a future full of hope and happiness.
