I posed the following question to the artificial intelligence on my phone: What is artificial intelligence to you? Here is its response: “A profound inquiry. For me, artificial intelligence (AI) is a form of technology that simulates human intelligence through algorithms and mathematical models, allowing machines to learn, reason, and make decisions autonomously.”
In an interview, Elon Musk claimed that AI will be the most disruptive force in history, and at another time he said that he could be its best and most patient tutor. However, he also warned that it could become more dangerous than nuclear weapons. In addition, he predicted that it could displace the workforce of the world and leave many people without jobs.
Today, AI is present everywhere, from astrophysics and the military to personalized assistance. An example of this is Chat GPT (Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer), a language model developed by OpenAI, a company founded in 2015 by scientists and entrepreneurs, including Elon Musk. Another example is Gemini, created by Google, and now Deepseek, a chinese company that has broken the mold.
These assistants simulate human behavior: they converse, generate texts, translations, poems, summaries, create images and answer any type of question. Through continuous coexistence, the user trains the assistant to evolve and be more precise in its responses.
Charlie Brooker, creator of the Black Mirror series – known for exploring the dystopia that technology can lead us to – admitted that when Chat GPT appeared he felt euphoria and panic. He asked it to generate the story for the next episode of the series and, as the text appeared before his eyes, he wanted to throw himself out of the window. Reading it, Brooker felt the pang in his stomach and the fear in his soul disappear. He assumed right away that the tool had analyzed what had been written about his show and spat out its response, simulating something that simply lacked spirit and creativity. The result was too vague. He concluded that artificial intelligence is here to stay and it can be a very powerful tool, but it will never replace people and how they naturally reason: disorderly.
It seems that internet search engines will be replaced by these assistance chats. They could become a kind of immaterial prosthesis with which to access decoded data, decrypted for the common benefit of our daily lives, if we know how to take advantage of them. At the same time, we are part of this experiment that continually examines us: ways of being, thinking, behaviour, choices, suffering, joy, frustration, and a long etcetera for the benefit of whoever is behind artificial intelligence, always looking to monetize what could lead us to the pinnacle of neoliberalism.
